As I drove down the road the other day, I noticed by the window a fly that was trapped inside the car. He was buzzing loudly, desperately looking for an escape route. As we rolled down the road, its little multi-faceted, compound eyes could view freedom, but he could not escape into it. As I drove, I contemplated what would be the fate of that fly. I could smash him there where he was buzzing, or I could roll down the window and let him out. I knew that if the choice was up to him, he would most certainly choose life and freedom; yet, he was trapped. That glass proved to be stronger that he was. For him, there was no way out – even if he was a ninja fly (which I suspect he may have been).
The predicament that the fly found itself
in seems to be the quandary that many people find themselves in when it comes
to sin. They desperately want to break free from its power, yet the quagmire of
sin draws them deeper and deeper in with no real way out. They can see what a
life free from sin looks like as they observe it in others, but they just
cannot break free. They find spots that look as if they offer liberation only
to find later that it was not an actual escape route.
That fly was finally able to escape after
I had compassion on it and rolled down the window to let it out. In other
words, though that fly was powerless against such a stubborn and strong
opponent like a window, when a power strong enough to push the button to roll
down the window decided to intervene, it finally found its freedom. Likewise,
if we are to gain freedom from such a powerful force as sin in our lives, then
it must be a higher power upon Whom we call to set us free. Too many people are
doing everything they can to overcome sin; but they are trying to do it in
their own strength, and they will never succeed. Only when we admit our
helplessness can God step in and, through his compassion and strength, allow us
to taste the freedom we have been craving. When you find yourself on the wrong
side of the window in your fight against sin, remember that God is watching you
grasp at your freedom, and He wants to set you free. Turn to Him and allow Him
to do what He has the power to do in your life – defeat the sin that is
enslaving you.
